Six months ago, I was a sought-after commodity. Then I was laid off without warning, and my phone went quiet. Not immediately — that would’ve been honest. The silence came gradually, from people I’d engaged with for years, after word got out. And I’m far from the only one.

I am surrounded by unemployed professionals in my generation. Much is said about the droves of journalists who are laid off. Less is said about what happens to them after.
